TETAMANU VILLAGE & FAKARAVA SOUTH PASS
Accommodation – Tetamanu Village, Fakarava South Pass
Tetamanu Village is one of those rare places left on Earth where the experience is not about luxury — it is about location, nature, and being completely immersed in the ocean.
For this expedition we stay at the famous Tetamanu Village, a remote Polynesian-style guesthouse located directly beside the legendary South Pass. The accommodation is simple, rustic, and authentic — this is not a five-star resort and we do not want to pretend otherwise. Rooms are basic, facilities are limited, and life here follows the rhythm of the island.
But what Tetamanu lacks in luxury, it replaces with something far more valuable: waking up in one of the most spectacular marine environments on the planet.
Within minutes of leaving the dock we are diving among hundreds of grey reef sharks, pristine coral reefs, schooling fish, and the famous “Wall of Sharks” that has made Fakarava one of the world’s most iconic dive destinations.
This is a place for ocean lovers, photographers, and adventurers — people who would happily trade room service and swimming pools for remote islands, star-filled skies, incredible diving, and memories that last a lifetime.
If your priority is luxury accommodation, Fakarava South Pass may not be for you. If your dream is to experience one of the healthiest shark ecosystems remaining on Earth and disconnect in a truly wild corner of French Polynesia, there are few places more special..
Why We Stay at Tetamanu Village
There are only a handful of accommodation options in the remote South Pass area of Fakarava, and we have chosen Tetamanu Village because of its unbeatable location for diving.
Tetamanu Village sits directly beside the dive center and lagoon, meaning everything is simple and easy. Wake up, have breakfast, prepare your camera equipment, and within minutes you are ready to dive one of the most spectacular shark ecosystems on Earth.
The nearby Sauvage offers a beautiful remote island experience and is another fantastic option in South Fakarava. However, it is located approximately a 10-minute walk away from the dive center. While this may not sound far, after multiple dives, carrying underwater camera systems, charging equipment, preparing for night dives, or returning tired after a long day in the water, convenience becomes extremely valuable.
Our focus on this expedition is the ocean. We maximize our time diving, photographing, and experiencing Fakarava’s incredible marine life — and staying at Tetamanu Village allows us to keep everything as easy and efficient as possible.
This is expedition-style travel: simple accommodation, world-class location, and immediate access to one of the greatest dive sites on the planet.
The Reality of Staying in Fakarava South Pass
We believe in being completely honest with our guests before they arrive. Fakarava South Pass is one of the most remote places we visit, and staying here is very different from the luxury resorts many people associate with French Polynesia.
Tetamanu Village is about location, not luxury. The accommodation is basic, island-style, and in places can feel a little tired. You may experience moments where freshwater is limited, facilities are not perfect, or island life does not run exactly to schedule. Meals are simple, and if you arrive late for lunch after everyone else, there may not always be unlimited options waiting.
This is the reality of being on a tiny remote atoll hundreds of miles into the Pacific Ocean.
But we are not travelling all this way for hotel rooms. We are here because just a few minutes from where we sleep is one of the greatest dive sites on the planet.
For a few days we trade luxury for adventure. We accept simple accommodation in exchange for drifting through thousands of fish, diving alongside hundreds of grey reef sharks, exploring untouched coral reefs, and experiencing a marine ecosystem that few places on Earth can match.
Five days living simply for four days diving the best pass in French Polynesia? For us, that trade is absolutely worth it.
If your perfect trip requires cocktails by the pool, room service, and polished resort facilities, this may not be the right adventure. But if waking up surrounded by ocean, grabbing your camera, walking straight to the dive boat, and experiencing world-class diving sounds like paradise — welcome to our expedition!
