COZUMEL ISLAND, THE CENOTES & WHALESHARKS
THE EXPEDITION
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - OPEN WATER LEVEL WITH 10 DIVES MIN
This Unique Ocean Expeditions adventure combines the best of two completely different underwater worlds — the vibrant coral reefs of Cozumel and the mystical freshwater cenotes of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Over the course of five incredible days, you’ll experience both ocean and cavern diving in one seamless itinerary that caters to beginners and seasoned divers alike. It’s an ideal mix of adventure, learning, and pure underwater magic — finished off with the unforgettable chance to swim alongside the world’s largest fish, the majestic whale shark.
The trip begins in Cozumel, where you’ll spend three days exploring the island’s famous drift dives along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Here, beginner divers can build confidence in warm, clear water while learning to handle mild currents and fine-tune their buoyancy. It’s also the perfect environment to gain experience toward your PADI Advanced Open Water certification or try Nitrox for the first time. Experienced divers, meanwhile, will appreciate Cozumel’s effortless flow — soaring along dramatic walls like Palancar and Santa Rosa while spotting turtles, eagle rays, and the endemic splendid toadfish.
After three days of ocean diving, we’ll switch gears and head inland to the cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed limestone that reveal an entirely new world beneath the jungle. The cenote dives on this expedition are introductory-level cavern dives, designed for those new to this type of diving, but still impressive enough to leave even advanced divers in awe. Crystal-clear freshwater, sunbeams slicing through the openings, and surreal rock formations create a truly otherworldly experience. It’s calm, meditative diving — the perfect complement to Cozumel’s current-swept reefs.
To top it all off, we’ll end the expedition with a snorkel encounter with whale sharks, the gentle giants that migrate through the region’s warm waters each year. Floating alongside these enormous creatures is one of the most humbling and awe-inspiring experiences in the ocean.
Altogether, this expedition offers a rare balance — fun, relaxed, and educational for new divers, yet still packed with world-class diving and adventure for those with more experience. From colorful coral walls to cathedral-like caverns and the open blue with whale sharks, it’s a journey that captures the full spirit of exploration that defines Unique Ocean Expeditions.
COZUMEL SCUBA DIVING
Here our adventure begins, Scuba Diving in Cozumel is a bit like jumping straight into a tropical aquarium that never ends. The island sits off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, surrounded by warm Caribbean water so clear it feels like you’re floating in glass. Cozumel’s main attraction is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — and it delivers some of the most vibrant coral walls anywhere. You drift effortlessly along massive drop-offs like Palancar, Columbia, and Santa Rosa, watching schools of angelfish and parrotfish flash through sunlight that filters down like stained glass. The currents do most of the work, making it one of the easiest — and most relaxing — styles of diving around.
This is also one of Unique Ocean Expeditions’ trips that beginner divers can join. It’s the perfect destination to build confidence and experience diving in gentle to moderate currents, learning the art of drift diving, and gaining the skills needed for more advanced adventures ahead. Cozumel offers an ideal setting for guests to work toward their PADI Advanced Open Water certification or experience diving with Nitrox for the first time. Every dive here becomes both an incredible experience and a valuable lesson — preparing you for the more challenging and remote expeditions we offer in the future.
Cozumel is also known for its marine life encounters. You can spot hawksbill turtles on almost every dive, southern stingrays gliding across sandy patches, and the occasional splendid toadfish — a species found only here. The deeper walls attract eagle rays and black groupers, while the shallow reefs offer playful patches full of lobster, moray eels, and colorful sponges. Night dives are especially spectacular, when octopus and basket stars come out, and bioluminescence twinkles in the dark water.
What’s nice is how accessible everything is. Dive operators are everywhere, the boats are efficient, and even beginners can enjoy world-class diving right off the coast. Yet it still appeals to seasoned divers chasing the thrill of fast drifts and deep walls. Add in the island’s laid-back vibe — a mix of authentic Mexican culture, beach bars, and taco stands — and Cozumel strikes the perfect balance between serious diving and easy living. Whether you’re logging your tenth dive or your thousandth, it’s one of those rare places that always reminds you why you fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
THE CENOTES
A "cenote" is a natural sinkhole created where a cave ceiling has collapsed. The Mayan considered cenotes to be an entrance to their "underworld" where their gods live and their spirits reside after death.
A combination of geologic events and climatic change has led to the development of these unique ecosystems.
Millions of years ago, the Yucatan peninsula was a giant reef set under several feet of ocean water. During the last ice age, the ocean level dropped (water levels were approximately 300 feet lower than their present day levels), exposing the reef to the surface.
The coral died, and jungle grew over the mile thick limestone platform created by the coral reef. Massive cave systems were formed, inside the caves the geological formations such as stalactites hang from the cave's ceiling, and stalagmites, which extend upwards from the cavern floor. Many of the caverns eventually collapsed and when the Ice Age came to a close 18,000 years ago, the climate of the planet warmed up, the glaciers receded, and the caves flooded as sea levels rose.
Carbon dating of artifacts found in some area caves shows them to have been visited by humans over 9,000 years ago.
THE WHALESHARKS
Whalesharks are the largest fish in the ocean, yet they are gentle, slow-moving filter feeders that pose no threat to humans.
Despite their size, they feed primarily on plankton and small fish, often swimming calmly near the surface. Encountering a whale shark in the wild is a powerful reminder of how vast, peaceful, and extraordinary the ocean can be.
Swimming with whale sharks in Cancún is one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife encounters in the ocean.
Each year, typically from May through June, these gentle giants gather off Cancún, Isla Mujeres, and Holbox to feed on plankton near the surface. Entering the water beside the world’s largest fish is both humbling and exhilarating, as they glide effortlessly just inches away. The experience is conducted by licensed operators with strict guidelines to ensure respectful, low-impact encounters. Warm water, good visibility, and the sheer size and grace of the whale sharks make this a true bucket-list adventure.

UNIQUE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS will be holding yearly expeditions to the famous Cenotes in Playa Del Carmen focusing on capturing amazing imagery of this unique underwater world. We aim on exploring a new cenote each day concentrating on caturing its beauty, below is some information of each cenote we will explore.
COZUMEL
Palancar Reef (Bricks / Caves / Horseshoe)
This is classic Cozumel diving: towering coral formations, swim-throughs, and effortless drift dives. Big sponges, turtles, and endless photo opportunities make it a favorite for all experience levels.Santa Rosa Wall
A dramatic vertical wall that drops into the blue, with strong currents and fast drift diving. Expect eagle rays, turtles, and that flying-over-the-reef feeling Cozumel is famous for.Columbia Deep
Deeper, more advanced diving with massive coral pinnacles rising from the depths. Less crowded and more dramatic, it’s ideal for experienced divers who want scale and spectacle.Paradise Reef
Shallow, colorful, and packed with life, especially great for relaxed dives, night dives, or newer divers. Octopus, nurse sharks, and schooling fish are common, particularly after dark.Punta Sur / Devil’s Throat
Cozumel’s most iconic advanced dive, featuring a deep swim-through exiting dramatically onto the wall. It’s technical, thrilling, and a bucket-list dive for confident, experienced divers only.CENOTES
Cenote Ponderosa, crystal clear water full of life hiding among the large blocks of collapsed limestone. The park is only 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen and Tulum On the cavern dive, we pass through a pronounced halocline (layers of fresh and salt water) and traverse over to Cenote Corral, while seeing amazing light effects throughout the dive.
Cenote Taj Ma Ha Cenote is a great cavern dive. This site is very popular amongst cavern divers because it offers a huge range of things to see. There are sections where you can observe the visual disturbance created when the layers of fresh and salt waters meet, called a halocline. When you dive to the point furthest from the cenote, you will find another beautiful sinkhole called Cenote Sugarbowl. Between the Sugarbowl and Taj Ma Ha cenotes, there is a huge chamber that is only partially filled with water. There are a few cracks in the ceiling of this chamber which, between the months of May and September, allow beams of light to come down through the water, making the Points of Light Room a must see during the summer months. It is a great beginner site, but extra care needs to be taken to prevent damage to the fragile formations.
Cenote The Pit is an amazing sinkhole inside the deep jungle, an upstream branch of the Sistema Dos Ojos. The Pit is with 391 ft/119 m the deepest cenote in the State of Quintana Roo. This dive will be for sure an unforgettable adventure in your life! Amazing sun rays penetrate to 30 m/100 ft crashing with a hydrogen sulfate cloud.
Cenote Dos Ojos are probably the world's best cavern dives. The name Dos Ojos means two eyes and refers to two neighboring cenotes which connect into a very large cavern zone shared between the two. These two cenotes appear like two large eyes into the underground. The original cave diving exploration of the whole cave system began through these cenotes. The Barbie Line, leads the diver mainly along the opening of the second eye, containing plenty of daylight. It also gives divers a lot of space to swim around huge columns and stalactites. The Bat Cave Line, feels almost like a cave. It is the darker of the two due to the fact that it leads around an air filled bat cave with little daylight entering.
Cenote Nicte Ha is located in the Jacinto Pat ejido just a couple of kilometers form cenote Dos ojos. The meaning of its name in mayan is water flower since it is fullfilled with lillyis plant and flowers in all its surroundings. It is a great site for snorkeling and chilling while the sun rays heat you up for one more dive in its super clear waters.
Cenote Maravilla and Siete Bocas, is located on the highway that joins Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario. Siete Bocas in Spanish means seven mouths and it is one of the many sinkholes in this region with a depth of more or less 70 meters. A gigantic Hydrosulfide cloud is the reason why some people also call this cenote ‘Milky Way’. Seven light beams enter through the roof and on a sunny day you can expect one amazing light show during your dive.
PHOTOGRAPHY
RICHARD BARNDEN from Richard Barnden Photography will be leading this expedition and sharing his knowledge and skills of shooting the Cenotes. Each evening Richard will give in depth presentations about the following days diving along with photography tips on settings and compositions.
The cenotes is one of the best places in the world to shoot those classic cavern shots with eye catching beams of penetrating light. Each day we will explore a new cenote and concentrate on capturing its beauty.
